The fifth king, Skandagupta, made a great effort to restore stable regional rule, but after his death around 467, the empire went into decline. Later, Narasiṃhagupta is said to have driven the Hephthalites out of the Ganges basin, but taking advantage of the empire's decline, local rulers began to break away from imperial control and become independent.
