…The oldest record of the corona is in Philostratus's Life of Apollonius of Tyana, where he saw a halo. There have been subsequent records of observations of the corona, and some people thought that the corona was a phenomenon in the Earth's atmosphere. However, it was William Harkness (1837-1908) and Charles Augustus Young (1834-1908) who discovered a specific emission line in the spectrum of the corona during the 1869 solar eclipse, and it was proven that the corona is part of the Sun's atmosphere. The presence of a black stain on the Sun's surface was recorded by Theophrastus of Athens, a close disciple of Aristotle. …
