A general term for laws that regulate litigation. Depending on the type of litigation, there are distinctions such as the Civil Procedure Code, the Criminal Procedure Code, and the Administrative Litigation Code. Because it specifies how trials are conducted, it is also called procedural law, and together with substantive law, which determines the standards for judgment in trials, it serves to resolve disputes (civil litigation and administrative litigation) or to realize criminal rights (criminal litigation). 訴訟を規律する法規の総称。訴訟の種類に応じて，民事訴訟法・刑事訴訟法・行政事件訴訟法などの区別がある。裁判の仕方を定めたものであるから，手続法とも呼ばれ，裁判における判断の基準を定める実体法と相まって，紛争の解決（民事訴訟・行政訴訟）あるいは刑罰権の実現（刑事訴訟）に奉仕する。
