A nomadic Turkic tribe in the Azerbaijan region of northwestern Iran. Population: about 90,000. It is said that the tribe originated from part of the guards established by Shah Abbas I (reigned 1588-1629) of the Safavid dynasty. The original meaning of the tribe's name is "lovers of the Shah." It was during the time of Nader Shah in the first half of the 18th century that the tribe began to take shape as a tribal group. Their winter camp is the Mugan Plain, which spreads across the lower reaches of the Aras (Arax) and Kura Rivers, which flow into the west coast of the Caspian Sea, and their summer camp is at the foot of Mount Sabalan (2,000-4,000 m above sea level), about 150 km south of there.
