Yoshihiro Matsumae

Japanese:
Yoshihiro Matsumae

The first lord of the Matsumae Domain. The third son of Kakizaki Suehiro. Born on September 3, 1551. His childhood name was Shinzaburo, and he inherited the family headship in 1582 (Tensho 10). In 1590, he deployed a strategy to approach the central government after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Oshu punishment, and in the same year, he went to Kyoto to meet Hideyoshi. The following year, he joined Hideyoshi's army in the Kunohe Masazane Rebellion, and when Hideyoshi began his invasion of Korea in 1592 (Bunroku 1), he quickly joined Hideyoshi's camp in Nagoya, Hizen (Saga Prefecture), and the following year, he received a red seal letter from Hideyoshi officially recognizing his rule over Ezo. As a result, he escaped from the control of the Ando clan and gained the status of lord of Ezo Island, but in 1699 (Keicho 4), he changed his surname to Matsumae, and in 1604 (Keicho 9), he received a black seal from Tokugawa Ieyasu officially recognizing his exclusive rights to trade with Ezo, and established his status as a modern daimyo. Yoshihiro was more of a politician with political power and diplomatic ability than a military commander, and played an extremely important role in the establishment of the Matsumae Domain. He died on October 12, 1622.
