German bass-baritone. He grew up in Munich, where he studied musicology and philosophy in addition to singing. He made his debut in 1929. In 1937, he became a singer at the Munich State Opera, where he appeared at the premieres of R. Strauss's operas "Die der Pfaffen" and "Capriccio." After World War II, he became active internationally, especially at the Bayreuth Festival, where he sang the leading roles in Wagner's music dramas one after another, and was praised as the greatest "Wagner singer" of the 20th century. With his chiseled and imposing singing style, he has continued to perform in the field of songs since retiring from the opera world in 1972.

ドイツのバス・バリトン歌手。ミュンヘンで育ち,同地で声楽のほかに音楽学と哲学を学ぶ。1929年デビュー。37年ミュンヘン国立歌劇場の歌手となり,R.シュトラウスのオペラ《平和の日》と《カプリッチョ》の初演の舞台に立つ。第2次大戦後,国際的に活躍するようになり,とくにバイロイト音楽祭でワーグナーの楽劇の主役を次々に歌って,20世紀最大の〈ワーグナー歌手〉と称賛された。彫りの深い堂々たる風格の歌いぶりで,72年オペラ界を引退してからは,歌曲の分野で演奏活動を続けている。
