1909‐2003 German bass-baritone. He grew up in Munich, where he studied musicology and philosophy in addition to singing. He made his debut in 1929. In 1937, he became a singer at the Munich State Opera, where he appeared at the premieres of R. Strauss's operas "Die der Pfaffen" and "Capriccio." After World War II, he became active internationally, especially at the Bayreuth Festival, where he sang the leading roles in Wagner's music dramas one after another, and was praised as the greatest "Wagner singer" of the 20th century. With his chiseled and imposing singing style, he has continued to perform in the field of songs since retiring from the opera world in 1972.
