Net role - Amiyaku

Japanese:
Net role - Amiyaku

During the Edo period, tax was collected from fishermen who fished on the beach or in rivers. Taxes were based on the type and size of nets, and the amount increased or decreased depending on the number of nets. Even for the same type of net in the same area, the amount of tax varied depending on the quality of the fishing grounds and the lord of the land. There were also fixed amounts of tax that were paid by all net owners in a village, regardless of the amount of catch or the number of nets. Taxes for nets were paid in kind (caught fish, rice) or in currency (gold, silver, and eisen), but in-kind payments were seen from the early to mid-Edo period, and currency payments became more common from the mid-Edo period onwards.
