Halophilic bacteria - Koenkin

A bacterium that grows in environments with high salinity (such as salt lakes). There are known weak halophiles (1.2-5% NaCl), moderate halophiles (5-20% NaCl), and extreme halophiles (> 20% NaCl). When organic matter is scarce, some have mechanisms that allow them to survive using sunlight energy. For example, the halophilic bacteria halobacteria in Lake Owens in California obtain energy from bacteriorhodopsin, a light-driven proton (H+) pump. Halophiles with large amounts of bacteriorhodopsin are purple, and the lake itself appears purple, which is why some salt lakes are also known as purple lakes.

塩分濃度の高い環境(塩湖など)で生育する菌．弱好塩菌(1.2～5％ NaCl)，中程度好塩菌(5～20％ NaCl)，高度好塩菌( ＞ 20％ NaCl)が知られている．有機物が少ないときは，太陽光エネルギーで生存できる仕組みを備えたものもある．たとえば，カリフォルニアのオーエンス湖の好塩菌halobacteriaは，光駆動性のプロトン(H＋)ポンプであるバクテリオロドプシンによってエネルギーを得ている．バクテリオロドプシンを多量に備えた好塩菌は紫色で，湖自体が紫色に見えることから，塩湖のなかには紫湖ともよばれるものもある．
