Joos van Gent

Japanese: ファン･ヘント（英語表記）Joos van Gent

A Flemish painter from around the 15th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. He was so named because he was from Ghent, but his real name was Joos van Wassenhove. He was registered as a free master in Antwerp in 1460 and in Ghent in 1464. His early masterpiece, the Crucifixion Altarpiece (Sint-Bagh Cathedral, Ghent), shows the influence of Bouts and van der Goes, but he established his own style with a fusion of crowds and landscapes, slender, slightly bent bodies, complex folds in the drapery, and a color scheme rich in subtle nuances.

15世紀ごろのフランドルの画家。生没年不詳。ヘント出身のためこう呼ばれたが，本名はヨース･ファン･ワッセンホーフェJoos van Wassenhove。1460年アントウェルペン(アントワープ)，64年ヘントで，それぞれ自由親方として登録。初期の代表作《十字架の磔刑の祭壇画》(ヘント，シント･バーフ大聖堂)では，バウツやファン･デル･フースの影響を示すものの，群衆と風景の融合，細身で少しそり曲がったポーズの身体，複雑な衣文の襞，微妙なニュアンスに富んだ色調などで自己の様式を確立。
