Oriental fire-bellied toad

A frog of the family Bombinae in the order Anura in the class Amphibians. It is a primitive species that is distributed from the Korean Peninsula to Primorsky Krai, the southern part of the northeastern region of China, and the Shandong Peninsula. It has been recorded as being distributed in Tsushima, Japan, but this is a misidentification. The dorsum is green or brown with scattered irregular black spots and numerous skin protuberances. The ventral surface is smooth and red with a mottled pattern of large black spots. The head is relatively small and flat, and the tympanum is unclear. Body length is 4 to 5 centimeters. It is often found in puddles around rice paddies, ditches, and streams, and in Korea, eggs are laid in around May. The egg masses are small and attach to aquatic plants or sink to the bottom. They are of the lumbar clasper type.

In addition to this species, the genus Bombina includes two other species from southern mainland China, the European Bombina bombina and the Yellow-bellied Bombina variegata . Members of this genus have red or yellow undersides and palms, and prominent black mottled markings. When threatened, they arch their backs and raise their chins and limbs to show off their markings.

両生綱無尾目スズガエル科のカエル。原始的な種で、朝鮮半島から沿海州、中国の東北地区南部、山東半島にかけて分布する。日本でも対馬(つしま)に分布するという記録があるが、これは誤認である。背面は緑色または褐色で不規則な黒斑(こくはん)が散在し、多数の皮膚隆起がある。腹面は平滑で赤色、大形の黒斑がまだら模様をなす。頭部は比較的小さく扁平(へんぺい)で、鼓膜は不明瞭(ふめいりょう)である。体長4、5センチメートル。水田、溝、渓流周辺の水たまりに多く、韓国では5月ごろに産卵する。卵塊は小さく、水草に付着したり、水底に沈む。腰部抱接型である。

　スズガエル属には本種のほか中国大陸南部の2種、ヨーロッパのヨーロッパスズガエルB. bombina、キバラスズガエルB. variegataが含まれる。この属の仲間は、腹面と掌部が赤色または黄色で、顕著な黒色のまだら状斑紋をもち、危険にさらされると背を反ってあごと四肢をあげ、この斑紋を誇示する。
