Carcharodon - Carcharodon

It is a member of the genus Carcharhodon and the order Sharks in the family Lamniformes. There is only one extant species, the great white shark C. carcharias, which can reach a total length of 6 meters. Several species of great white shark have been discovered in Paleogene and Neogene strata around the world. The most famous of these is Carcharodon megalodon , which is common in the Miocene epoch of the Neogene. Its large serrated teeth suggest that it may have reached a body length of 16 meters. Some people believe that the fossil species from before the Miocene epoch, including this species, are Carcharocles . In Japan, fossilized teeth of Carcharodon megalodon have long been known as "Tengu's claws."

軟骨魚綱サメ目ネズミザメ科ホホジロザメ属。現生種はホホジロザメC. carcharias1種で、全長6メートルに達する。化石は世界各地の古第三紀と新第三紀の地層から数種類発見されている。なかでも新第三紀中新世に多いカルカロドン・メガロドンC. megalodonは有名で、鋸歯(きょし)のある大きな歯から体長16メートルにも達したと考えられている。本種を含む中新世以前の化石種をカルカロクレスCarcharoclesとする意見もある。日本ではカルカロドン・メガロドンの歯の化石が古くから「天狗の爪」として知られている。
