Daijima type flora

Japanese: 台島型植物群 - だいじまがたしょくぶつぐん

Plant fossils found in the lower Miocene Tertiary formations throughout Japan. The plant group is composed mainly of warm temperate evergreen broadleaf trees and warm temperate deciduous trees, such as oak, konara ra, chestnut, stenophylla, camphor, thunbergia, liquidum, bayberry, zelkova, and others, with a small amount of conifers mixed in. It is thought to have originated in lowlands near the warm and humid coasts. A typical group of fossils was found in the Daijima Formation on the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, hence the name. These plant fossils have been found widely in various places from northern Kyushu to central Hokkaido, and indicate that the early Miocene was significantly warmer than today.

日本各地の第三系中新統下部から発見される植物化石群。カシ，コナラ，クリ，マテバシイ，クス，タブノキ，フウ，ヤマモモ，ケヤキその他，暖帯性常緑広葉樹と暖温帯落葉樹を主体とし，少量の針葉樹が混じる植物群で，温暖湿潤な海岸近くの低地のものと考えられている。秋田県男鹿半島に分布する台島層中に典型的な化石群が発見されているためこの名がある。この植物化石群は，九州北部から北海道中部に至る各地から広く発見されており，中新世初期が現在に比べて著しく温暖であったことを示す。
