The lagoon is separated from the Adriatic Sea by the Lido Island, which stretches out like a dike, and is constantly purified by the seawater that flows in and out of three natural sluice gates along the way. Venice was born on the delicate natural environment of this living lagoon, and has built a unique city while overcoming the difficult conditions on the waterside.
