Essai (English spelling)

Japanese: エッサイ（英語表記）Essai

A figure from the Old Testament. Son of Obed, father of David. Originally meaning "rich." Jesse was the first person in the genealogy of Christ, and from this the House of David was called "the stump of Jesse" (Isaiah 11:1 in the Vulgate), and the future Messiah (i.e. Christ) who would come from the House of David was called "the shoot of Jesse" (ibid. and Romans 15:12). The theme of the genealogy of Christ originating from Jesse, depicted as a tree and portrait, was used in window paintings for church decoration from the 12th to 16th centuries, and is called the "window of Jesse."

旧約聖書の人物。ダビデの父，オベドの子。原義は「富める」の意。エッサイを最初の人物としてキリストの系図が書かれ，ここからダビデ家を「エッサイの根株」 (ウルガタ訳イザヤ書 11・1) と呼び，ダビデ家より生ずべき未来のメシア (すなわちキリスト) を「エッサイのひこばえ」 (同上およびローマ書 15・12) という。このエッサイより発するキリストの系図を木と肖像とで表わした画題は，12～16世紀の教会装飾として窓ガラス画に用いられ，これを「エッサイの窓」と呼ぶ。
