Eighteen Jodo sect training centers in the Kanto region. They were originally training halls where sect members were lectured on the doctrine of the sect, but later came to mean training institutions for monks. They were originally built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, modeled after the 18th vow of Amida Buddha, and were said to have been built to pray for the prosperity of the 18 Matsudaira clan members. The 18 temples are Zojoji, Denzuin, Komyo-ji, Jofuku-ji, Daiko-in, Kokyo-ji in Iinuma, Reigan-ji, Banzui-in, Reizan-ji, Renkei-ji, Shogan-ji, Daizen-ji, Jokoku-ji, Daigan-ji, Kokyo-ji in Yuki, Tozen-ji, Zendo-ji, and Dainen-ji. 関東における浄土宗の一八か所の談義所。宗徒に宗義を講義する道場であったが、後に僧侶の養成機関を意味するようになった。初め徳川家康が、阿彌陀如来の第十八願に擬し、松平家十八公の繁栄を祈願して建立したという。増上寺、伝通院、光明寺、常福寺、大光院、飯沼の弘経寺、霊巖寺、幡随院、霊山寺、蓮馨寺、勝願寺、大善寺、浄国寺、大巖寺、結城の弘経寺、東漸寺、善導寺、大念寺の一八寺。十八檀(談)林。田舎檀林。
