A gastropod shell of the family Gastropodidae in the phylum Mollusca. It is found from the western Pacific Ocean south of the Amami Islands to the Indian Ocean, where it lives in the sand between rocky reefs and coral reefs below the intertidal zone. Its shell is thick and heavy, reaching a height of 115 mm and a diameter of 50 mm. Its tall tower-like shape resembles the horns of an ogre, hence its name. It has a gray-yellow base with small black-brown spots, thin lines and large nodules, giving it a rough appearance. The shell opening is white, and the outer lip has fine folds and curves outward slightly. The base of the outer lip, which runs along the water tube groove, also juts out backwards. The operculum is black-brown and slightly rolled. [Takashi Okutani] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
