Giant knobbed creeper

A gastropod shell of the family Gastropodidae in the phylum Mollusca. It is found from the western Pacific Ocean south of the Amami Islands to the Indian Ocean, where it lives in the sand between rocky reefs and coral reefs below the intertidal zone. Its shell is thick and heavy, reaching a height of 115 mm and a diameter of 50 mm. Its tall tower-like shape resembles the horns of an ogre, hence its name. It has a gray-yellow base with small black-brown spots, thin lines and large nodules, giving it a rough appearance. The shell opening is white, and the outer lip has fine folds and curves outward slightly. The base of the outer lip, which runs along the water tube groove, also juts out backwards. The operculum is black-brown and slightly rolled.

軟体動物門腹足綱オニノツノガイ科の巻き貝。奄美(あまみ)諸島以南の西太平洋からインド洋にかけて分布しており、潮間帯下の岩礁やサンゴ礁の間の砂地にすんでいる。殻高115ミリメートル、殻径50ミリメートルに達し、殻は厚く重い。高い塔形をしていて、その形を鬼の角に見立ててこの名がある。灰黄色の地に黒褐色の小斑(しょうはん)があり、細い筋(すじ)と大きい結節があって、ごつごつしている。殻口は白色で、外唇は細かいひだがあり、いくぶん外向きに反る。また水管溝に沿う外唇底は後方に張り出している。蓋(ふた)は黒褐色でわずかに巻いている。
