Benivieni, A.

...Pathology as an academic discipline is divided into specific pathology, which describes and analyzes the pathological changes that occur in the various organs of the body, and general pathology, which classifies the lesions that occur in each organ system according to their nature and origin, summarizes them in a unified concept, and attempts to find patterns in the way the body responds to the causes of disease.
[History of Pathology]
The term pathology was first used in the second volume of Medicina (1554) by J. Fernel in the mid-16th century, but the medical approach of trying to discover the true nature of disease by comparing clinical symptoms with organ lesions can be traced back to Antonio Benivieni (1443-1502) in the late 15th century. He wrote On the Hidden and Mysterious Causes of Diseases (1507), which described the findings of over 100 patients during their lifetime and at pathological anatomy, and is considered the father of pathological anatomy.
