Panchen Lama (English spelling) Paṇ chen bla ma

Japanese: パンチェン･ラマ（英語表記）Paṇ chen bla ma

The common name of the reincarnated abbot of Tashi Lhunpo, a great monastery of the Gelu sect of Buddhism in the Tsang region of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. After the death of his teacher, Lobsang Choekyi Gyentshen, who had long been the abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, the Fifth Dalai Lama decided to have a selected reincarnation rule Tsang, a former base of sectarian conflict, through this monastery in order to keep it under the control of the Gelu sect. He is generally believed to be the reincarnation of Amitabha Buddha, and is given a position second only to the Dalai Lama. However, an anti-Dalai Lama and anti-central government atmosphere naturally developed around the Panchen Lama, and the Second Panchen Lama has already cooperated with the Qing dynasty and obtained many political privileges.

中国，チベット自治区ツァン地方にある仏教ゲルー派大僧院タシルンポの転生者住職の通称。ダライ･ラマ5世が，タシルンポ寺に長く住持した師僧ロサン･チューキ･ゲンツェンの没後，この大僧院を通じて，かつての宗派抗争の拠点であったツァン地方を，ゲルー派の掌中に収めておくため，選ばれた転生者に支配させることにした。一般には阿弥陀仏の化身の転生者と信じられ，ダライ･ラマに次ぐ地位を与えられている。しかし，パンチェン･ラマの周囲にその後反ダライ･ラマ，反中央政府の気風がおのずからでき上がり，すでにパンチェン･ラマ2世は清朝に協力して多くの政治的特権を獲得した。
