Symphonie fantastique

Symphonie fantastique

Symphony in C major (Op. 14a) composed by the French composer Berlioz. It premiered in Paris in 1830. This work occupies a special place in the history of Western music as an example of the thorough incorporation of elements of "program music" into the "symphony," a representative form of absolute music. The work is subtitled "Episode de la vie d'une artiste," and the composer's passionate love for Harriet Smithson, an actress in the British Shakespeare Company, was the driving force behind the creation of the work. The music depicts the opium-induced fantasies of a lovelorn artist, and the five movements have the following titles: (1) Dream, Passion, (2) Ball, (3) Field Landscape, (4) March to the Scaffold, and (5) Dream of the Witches' Vespers - Witches' Rondo. Characteristic features of the musical composition include the use of a fixed idea (idée fixe), which represents lovers, in all movements to give the work unity, and the diverse orchestration that dramatically expanded the expressive range of the orchestra.
