Yukie Hirata

Japanese: 平田靱負 - ひらたゆきえ

1704-1755 A samurai from the mid-Edo period.
Born on August 12, 1760. He was a senior retainer of the Satsuma Kagoshima Domain. In 1766, when the lord of the domain, Shimazu Shigetoshi, received an order from the shogunate to carry out flood control work on the Kiso River, he became the chief magistrate. After much hardship, he completed the work, but took responsibility for the enormous expense of 400,000 ryo and the large number of casualties, and committed suicide on May 25, 1766. He was 52 years old. His real name was Munetake Masasuke.

宝永元年8月12日生まれ。薩摩(さつま)鹿児島藩家老。宝暦3年藩主島津重年(しげとし)が幕府から木曾川治水工事を命じられると,総奉行となる。苦難の末に工事を完成させたが,40万両にものぼる莫大な出費と多数の犠牲者をだした責任をとって,宝暦5年5月25日自刃(じじん)した。52歳。名は宗武,正輔。
