French composer. Both parents were of Spanish descent. He studied at the Conservatoire de Lille in his hometown and at the Conservatoire de Paris. He struggled to gain recognition as a composer, working as a viola and second violinist in a string quartet, but from the late 1860s he devoted himself to composition. He gained fame with his Violin Concerto (1873) and Symphonie Espagnole (1874) for violin and orchestra, both premiered by Sarasate, and showed a unique style of composition in the French musical world of the late 19th century. Other representative works include the Cello Concerto (1877), the ballet music Namouna (1882), and the opera Les Reis (1875-1887, premiered in 1888). He also left behind chamber music and songs.

フランスの作曲家。父母ともにスペイン系。生地のリール音楽院とパリ音楽院に学ぶ。作曲家としてなかなか認められず弦楽四重奏団のビオラ奏者・第２バイオリン奏者として活動したが，1860年代後半から作曲に専念。ともにサラサーテにより初演された《バイオリン協奏曲》（1873年），バイオリンと管弦楽のための《スペイン交響曲》（1874年）によって名声を得，19世紀後半のフランス楽壇にあって異色の作風を示した。代表作にはほかに，《チェロ協奏曲》（1877年），バレエ音楽《ナムーナ》（1882年），オペラ《イスの王》（1875年−1887年，初演1888年）など。室内楽曲や歌曲も残した。
