Farmers who practice slash-and-burn agriculture in the mountainous region of northern Korea. They cultivate self-sufficient crops (foxtail millet, potatoes, soybeans, buckwheat, corn, etc.), and when the soil loses fertility after 3 to 5 years, they wander in search of suitable land. Since ancient times, there have been many bans on slash-and-burn agriculture because it has led to forest destruction, fires, and floods, but during the period of Japanese rule in Korea, farmers who lost their land became slash-and-burn people in northern Korea, and their numbers increased rapidly. After the establishment of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, state-run livestock farming was introduced in the region in an effort to eliminate the slash-and-burn people, and they disappeared in the late 1970s. → Related article: Gaima Plateau Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
