Treaty of San Stefano

The Treaty of San Stefano (now called Hagia Stafanos) was signed in March 1878 at the western outskirts of Istanbul as a result of the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78). It recognised the complete independence of the three Ottoman states of Serbia, Montenegro, and Romania, and established the Grand Bulgarian Principality from the Danube to the Aegean Sea (including Macedonia). It also granted autonomy to Bosnia and Herzegovina, special privileges to the island of Crete and the Armenian-inhabited areas of Anatolia (the eastern provinces), and ceded to Russia the provinces of Kars, Ardahan, Batumi, and Bayezid on the eastern border of the Ottoman Empire.

露土戦争(1877‐78)の結果，オスマン帝国とロシアとの間で，1878年3月イスタンブールの西郊サン･ステファノSan Stefano(アヤ･スタファノスともよばれ，現在のイェシルキョイYeşilköy)において調印された講和条約。この条約によって，オスマン帝国内のツルナゴーラ(モンテネグロ)，セルビア，ルーマニアの完全独立が承認されたほか，ドナウ川からエーゲ海に至る大ブルガリア公国の設立(マケドニアを含む)，ボスニア･ヘルツェゴビナへの自治権付与，クレタ島とアナトリア内のアルメニア人居住地域(東部諸州)とへの特権付与，ベッサラビアおよびアナトリアの帝国東部国境地域におけるカルス，アルダハン，バトゥーム(現，バトゥーミ)，バヤジト地方のロシアへの割譲などが定められた。
