Austrian medical scientist. Born to an innkeeper in Graz, he graduated from the University of Vienna in 1752 and became a doctor. He worked at the Spanish Hospital in Vienna from 1754, where he conducted research on the percussion method, which he published in 1761. It is said that he invented the percussion method after being inspired by his father tapping wine barrels in the family winery as a child to examine their contents. At the time, his discovery was met with mixed reviews, and the response was not good at all. After that, the percussion method was gradually forgotten, but in 1808, about 50 years after its invention, it was taken up by the Frenchman Corbizar. Corbizar translated Auenbrugger's book " Inventum novum " (A new invention for the detection of deep intrathoracic lesions by percussion on the human chest), and published it with notes, which led to the percussion method becoming widely used in Europe and being re-imported to Vienna.
