A writer and scholar from the Republic of Kazakhstan (Kazakhstan). In addition to many novels and plays dealing with the process of national liberation and the construction of collective farms, he has also written research papers on Kazakh and Kyrgyz folklore, and translated works by Gogol and Shakespeare into Kazakh. His epic novels, Abai (1942-1947) in two volumes and its sequel Abai's Way (1952-1956) in two volumes, lyrical portrayals of the hardships of nomads who awaken to the struggle against the oppression of Tsarist Russia, and the life of the Kazakh folk poet and enlightener Abai Kunambayev, for which he received the Lenin Prize in 1959.
