…In the Puritan Revolution, a widespread sectarian movement developed around powerful leaders, but as the revolution turned to a turning point, the revolutionary government began to oppress popular movements that did not pledge loyalty and submission to them. Among the Ranters, which by this time had been made up of various factions, new leaders such as Abieser Coppe (1619-72) and Laurence Clarkson (Claxton) (1615-67) emerged and held enthusiastic meetings in taverns.
