A nobleman and poet from the late Heian period. He was from the Murakami Genji clan. He was the son of the daughter of the Grand Minister of State, Minamoto Masazane, and the judge of Kaneyu, Fujiwara Tsuneo (or Tagami Jiro). He became a councilor in 1119, and rose through the ranks until he was the Minister of the Right, with the rank of Junior Second Rank, in 1150. However, he resigned from his position in 1154 and became a monk. He was given the title of Minister of the Right, Nakain, as his residence was called. He was often asked to give his opinion on matters of court rank, and this continued even after he became a monk. His father taught him the dance of Kojuin, and he was highly praised from the age of nine. He was also known as a master of the sho. He became the husband of Fujiwara Akisue, and he developed an interest in waka poetry, and 19 of his poems were included in imperial anthologies, including the Kinyoshu. He was also friends with Saigyo.
