Japanese: ツチカメムシ(土亀虫) - ツチカメムシ（英語表記）ground bug

A general term for insects belonging to the Hemiptera, Heteroptera, and Cydnidae families. They are generally black to reddish brown, with many species being solid colors, but occasionally there are species with markings. They are small or medium in size, with a body length not exceeding 20 mm. They differ from the Hemiptera family in that they have rows of hard, cedar-leaf-like spines on the tibiae of each leg. They have four antennae, a short four-segmented proboscis, and three-segmented tarsus. They live either terrestrially or underground, and suck the juices from fruits and seeds of plants that have fallen to the ground. There are approximately 600 known species worldwide, with approximately 20 known in Japan.

半翅目異翅亜目ツチカメムシ科Cydnidaeに属する昆虫の総称。一般に黒色～赤褐色で単色の種類が多く，まれに斑紋のある種類がいる。小型または中型で体長20mmを超えない。各肢の脛節（けいせつ）にスギの葉状の硬いとげが列生している点でカメムシ科と異なる。触角は4節，口吻（こうふん）は短く4節，跗節（ふせつ）は3節である。地表性または土中性で，地上に落下した植物の実や種子を吸汁する。世界に約600種，日本から約20種が知られている。
