...As seen in the struggle over the encomiendas from the beginning of the colonial period, the royal family was forced to take a position of protecting the Indians, not only for the purpose of Christianization but also to stabilize the national treasury revenue, and this confrontation continued throughout the colonial period with the colonists who were trying to make the most of the Indians. Furthermore, due to geographical distance and underdeveloped means of transportation and communication, the laws for protecting the Indians issued by the royal family were often ignored. The royal family often turned a blind eye to such violations, not only because they wanted to avoid conflict with the powerful colonists, but also because the laws sometimes ran counter to the immediate interests of the royal family itself, such as raising funds for war and securing the maintenance of parasitic aristocrats. ...
