The act of eliciting other ideas from one idea. In English, it is called "association of ideas." The theory of association of ideas is prominent in British empiricism, and Hume in particular regarded the relationship between ideas as being in terms of three natural relations: resemblance, proximity, and causation, and gave it a positive significance. Hartley further argued that it had a physiological basis. The theory of association of ideas has also influenced free association in psychoanalysis.
