Spring Festival

A festival held in the spring. Festivals with this name are generally held between February and April depending on the calendar, and the name of the festival varies depending on the region. Representative festivals are held on Hatsuuma in February and on the 8th day of Uzuki in April. Spring is the season when all things grow, and many festivals are held as a prelude to welcome the gods down from the mountains and to start work in the fields. In the Tohoku region, many places hold spring festivals in February or March, which is the day when the crop god descends. In the Kanto region, March 15th is called Koto Day, and there are examples of holding a Koto Festival. On this day, people make grass mochi (rice cakes) to send away the sick. A spring Koto Festival is also held in the Chugoku region. On March 16th, called Oikoto, new bamboo chopsticks are woven into a rope and stuck into a persimmon tree. Even in the Kinki region, Koto Festivals are held on March 16th in Osaka Prefecture and Wakayama Prefecture.

Kyushu has many lively shrine festivals, but there are also quiet village rituals. On Iki Island in Nagasaki Prefecture, the Hatsuuma Festival is called Harugomori, and people cook surikiri-meshi (a large portion of rice) and eat it together as a group. This is called Sejo Matsuri, and it also has the meaning of praying for a good harvest. In Ozu Town, Kikuchi County, Kumamoto Prefecture, the middle day of the spring equinox is called Sha-nichi, and it is said that on this day the god of harvest visits homes. People prepare a feast and pray for a good harvest. In the Aso foothills region, there is a custom of always climbing mountains during the spring and autumn equinoxes, and people observe abstinence from certain things. In Izumi County, Kagoshima Prefecture, the first day of the equinox is also called Sashi, and people make a pilgrimage to the mountains. It is thought that this was to pray for a good harvest that year.

春に行う祭り。この名の祭りは暦の新旧などもあるので、だいたい2月から4月にかけて行われており、祭りの名称も土地によって異なっている。2月の初午(はつうま)、4月の卯月(うづき)8日などが代表的な祭りである。春は万物の生育する時節であり、神が山から降りてこられるのを迎え、田の仕事を開始する予祝祭となっているのが多い。東北地方では、2月または3月は、作神(さくがみ)様がお降りになる日といって春祭をする所が多い。関東地方では、3月15日をコトの日といってコト祭をする例がみられる。この日草餅(くさもち)をつくって病(やまい)送りをする。春のコト祭は中国地方にもある。3月16日にオイコトといって、この日新調した竹の箸(はし)を縄に編んで、柿(かき)の木などに刺しておくという。近畿地方でも、3月16日にコト祭をする例が大阪府や和歌山県にある。

 九州には神社のにぎやかな祭りが多いが、村の静かな神事もある。長崎県壱岐(いき)島では初午祭のことを春ごもりといって、すりきり飯(高盛り飯)をつくり組合中で会食する。これを世上祭(せじょうまつり)といい、豊年を祈念する意味を含めている。熊本県菊池郡大津(おおづ)町では、春彼岸(ひがん)の中日を社日(しゃにち)といって、この日作神様が家々を訪れるという。御馳走(ごちそう)をつくって豊作を祈ることにしている。阿蘇山麓(あそさんろく)地方では、春秋の彼岸にはかならず登山する習慣があって、物忌みをすることになっていた。鹿児島県出水(いずみ)郡でも彼岸の第1日をサシと称して、山参りすることになっていた。その年の豊作を祈念する意味があったと思われる。
