A city in central-western Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1954. Located in the center of the Ishikari Plain, at the confluence of the Ishikari River and the Ebetsu River, it was once an important water transportation location. The Hakodate Main Line and the Do-o Expressway pass through the city. The city cultivates feed crops, raises many dairy cows, and has many large ranches. It is also a thriving agricultural product collection and fertilizer and agricultural machinery sales site. There is a large paper mill built in 1908, a brick factory that mainly produces clay pipes, and a dairy industry. In 1964, it was designated as a new industrial city, and industrial parks, universities, and the prefectural library have been established one after another. It is located to the east of Sapporo City, and since 1990, the number of people commuting to Sapporo has been increasing. The Nopporo Primeval Forest (a special natural monument) is located between Sapporo City and Kitahiroshima City. It has an area of 187.38 ^km2 . Population: 123,722 (2010).

北海道中西部の市。1954年市制。石狩平野の中央，石狩川と江別川の合流点に位置し，かつては水運の要地であった。函館本線，道央自動車道が通じる。飼料作物を栽培し，多数の乳牛を飼育し，広大な牧場も多く，農産物集荷，肥料・農機具販売も盛ん。1908年建設の大規模な製紙工場，土管の生産を中心とする煉瓦工場があり，製酪工業も行われ，1964年新産業都市に指定され，工業団地，大学，道立図書館などの進出が相次いだ。札幌市の東隣にあって1990年から札幌への通勤・通学者が増加している。札幌市，北広島市にかけて野幌(のっぽろ)原始林（特別天然記念物）がある。187.38km²。12万3722人（2010）。
