A village in Tone County, northeastern Gunma Prefecture. Population 4,273 (1995). Located on the northeastern edge of the Numata Basin, the village occupies the mountainous area at the southern foot of Mt. Hotaka, with cultivated land and settlements spreading to the southwest. Most of the village is forest land, and konjac and vegetables are also cultivated. In recent years, efforts have been made to promote tourism and agriculture, including the creation of a nature resort village. The village also has a 200-year tradition of making zashiki boki (Japanese-style brooms), centered around the production of fresh produce at the southern end of the village. The population continued to decline from the 1960s to the mid-1970s, but in recent years, this downward trend has been halted. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
