A general name for the red algae of the Porphyra genus in the family Bangiocarpaceae, which is used to make Asakusa nori and tsukudani. The main species include Asakusa nori and Susabinori. They are found along the coasts of the world, except in tropical regions. Their bodies are membranous and reddish purple, and many are shaped like bamboo leaves or irregularly circular. Their size varies by species, but most are 10-20 cm, with some reaching over 20 cm and others less than 5 cm. About 20 species grow along the coasts of Japan, including species whose bodies are made up of a single layer of cells (Asakusa nori, Susabinori, Uppuri nori, Oniamanori, etc.) and species whose bodies are made up of two layers of cells (Tasa, Huiritasa, Benitasa, etc.).
