An opera (op. 33) by the British composer Britten. The playwright M. Slater adapted the 22nd chapter of the long poem The Home Rule Village (1810) by the poet Crabbe into a libretto. It has a prologue and three acts. Fisherman Peter Grimes is suspected by the villagers of his cousin's death, and finally goes out to sea to die. The opera was composed between 1944 and 1945, towards the end of World War II, and premiered in London in June 1945. The music vividly depicts the calm and storms of the sea, and skillfully expresses the psychological conflicts of the characters. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
