1763‐1832 He was a key figure in the founding of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945) and a symbolic figure in the development of southern Vietnam. He was born in Quang Ngai Province in central Vietnam, but came of age in My Tho in the south. He served Emperor Gia Long, who would later become the founder of the Nguyen Dynasty, from an early age, and lived in Thailand with him. After Gia Long returned to Vietnam, he continued to serve as a general in the fight against the Tay Son Party, and after the unification of the country in 1802, he made a name for himself in putting down rebellions by the mountain people of central Vietnam and in diplomacy with Thailand. In 1820, when Emperor Minh Mang ascended to the throne, he was appointed commander of Gia Dinh, and was entrusted with the governance of the south for the next 12 years.
