Peyla, L. (English spelling) PeylaL

... an ignition device, especially a cigarette lighter for lighting cigarettes. Around 1779, Italian L. Peyla invented the "Turin candle," which was made by putting wax in a glass tube, filling one end with phosphorus, sulfur, and oil, and breaking the glass tube to ignite it. In 1823, German chemist JW Dobereiner created an ignition device that ignited when hydrogen was blown onto a platinum sponge (spongy platinum) attached to the mouth of the glass container of a hydrogen generating device, and by 1828, about 20,000 of these were in use in Germany and England.
