The capital of Panama, Central America. Facing the Bay of Panama, it is the cultural, economic, political and other center of Panama. Population: 445,902 (1994). It is connected to the Americas by the Pan-American Highway and to Colon by the Panama Railway. Panama City was founded in 1519 by Pedro Arias de Avila and became an important base for the Spanish conquest and colonial rule of Central and South America.
