Japanese: 引船 - ひきぶね（英語表記）tug boat

A workboat that tows other ships or barges without propulsion systems. It is also written as tugboat. It was used for river navigation, but recently it is mainly built as a tugboat in ports or on the coast. It is used to help large ships dock and leave the berth or enter the dock, so it requires a large pulling force and strong horsepower rather than speed. There are various types of tugboats, from large ones that can sail on the ocean to small ones that are easy to maneuver.

他の船や推進機関をもたないはしけなどを引張って航行する作業船。曳船とも書く。河川での運行などに使われていたが，最近ではもっぱら港内あるいは沿岸の引船，いわゆるタグボートとして造られる。大型船が離接岸したり，ドック入りするときの航行援助に使われるため，速力よりも牽引力が大きく，馬力の強いことが要求される。このタグボートにも，洋上を航行できる大型のものから，小回りのきく小型のものまで，さまざまなものがある。
