Date of birth and death unknown. A military commander in the early Kamakura period. Original surname Fujiwara. Son of Kagemitsu. He lived in Amano, Tagata County, Izu Province (present-day Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture) and adopted the surname Amano, calling himself Tounai. Since Minamoto no Yoritomo's uprising in 1180 (Jisho 4), he followed Yoritomo and distinguished himself in battle, especially following Noriyori in chasing the Taira clan to the Western Sea. He was subsequently appointed as the Chinzei Bugyo (magistrate of the Chinzei region) and was involved in the organization of Dazaifu (the central government office of the Dazaifu) and managed Kyushu. However, he was relieved of his duties by around 1194 (Kenkyu 5) at the latest and returned to Kamakura, and later, upon Yoritomo's death (1199), he became a monk and took the name Renkei. In September 1203 (Kennin 3), he executed Hiki Yoshikazu on the orders of Hojo Tokimasa.
