On December 10, 1941, at the beginning of the Pacific War, 84 Japanese Navy medium attack aircraft sank the British Eastern Fleet's new battleship Prince of Wales and fast battleship Repulse off the coast of Malaya. At the start of the war, the British Eastern Fleet was based in Singapore and tasked with attacking Japanese convoys, but Japanese aircraft taking off from near Saigon captured two battleships and sank them mainly with torpedoes. As a result, the Japanese military gained control of the seas from the South China Sea to the Straits of Malacca, eliminating the naval threat to the execution of the Malayan Campaign. This result also established the decisive superiority of aircraft over battleships.
