Book of the Later Han

A historical book that records the Later Han period in China. One of the official histories. It consists of 120 volumes. Of these, 10 volumes of the Annals and 80 volumes of Biographies were written by Fan Ye (398-445), and 30 volumes of Zhi were taken from the Zhi in the Book of the Later Han by Sima Biao (c. 240-c. 306) of the Jin dynasty. Ye was from the Southern Song dynasty, and wrote it by referring to several versions of the Book of the Later Han that had been written up to that point, even revising the original texts according to his own ideas. He created the Wenyuan, the biographies of women, and the biographies of eunuchs, and added prefaces to the biographies of officials and always included commentary in the Chronicles and Biographies. The Zhi is flawed in that it lacks two sections: food, money, and art and literature.

中国、後漢時代を記した歴史書。正史の一つ。120巻。そのうち本紀10巻、列伝80巻は范曄(はんよう)（398―445）の撰(せん)であり、志30巻は晋(しん)の司馬彪(しばひょう)（240ころ―306ころ）の『続漢書』の志であったものをとっている。曄は南朝宋(そう)の人で、それまでに書かれた数種の『後漢書』を参考にして、自分の考えをもって原典の文章を改削さえもして著した。文苑(ぶんえん)、列女、宦者(かんじゃ)伝などを設け、循吏(じゅんり)伝以下に序を付したのをはじめ、紀、伝にはかならず論賛を付した。志は食貨、芸文の2志を欠くのが欠点である。
