Colloquial name for snail shells. Originates from the archaic word tsubi or tsubura (synonymous with jar, meaning something round and bulging). In Hokkaido, tsubuyaki, which refers to the Ezobora species, especially Himezobora, is a famous local dish, grilled over an open fire and dipped in ginger and soy sauce. Among the shellfish, Ezobora is also called Matsubu, Kuriirozobora is called Shiotsubu, Shiraitomakibai is called Toudaitsubu, Mossogai is called Verotsubu, and Ayabora is called Ketsubu. The salivary glands in the heads of Ezobora species contain tetramine, which can cause poisoning if eaten in large quantities, so it is recommended to remove this before eating.
