The Amano clan originated from Amano-go, Tagata-gun, Izu Province, when Kagemitsu, the son of Ryue Kagezumi, a branch of the powerful Kudo clan of Izu, took the name Amano. Kagemitsu's son Amano Tokage followed Minamoto no Yoritomo as his aide after he raised an army in 1180 (Jisho 4), and then joined Minamoto no Noriyori's army and traveled to the western provinces to pursue the Taira clan. In 1185 (Bun'ei 1), he became the magistrate of the Chinzei region and moved to Dazaifu in Kyushu, where he became the local representative for the Kamakura shogunate's control of Kyushu. The Amano clan thus acquired territory in Kyushu, but Tokage was relieved of his post after less than ten years, and so he did not put down roots there, and his descendants ended up with territories in Musashi, Totomi, Mino, Noto, and other areas.
