《 European Union 》An organization based on the EC (European Community) that aims to achieve common foreign and security policies and monetary unification. It was established in November 1993 with the coming into force of the Maastricht Treaty (Treaty on European Union). In many countries within the region, immigration and customs inspections have been abolished, allowing free movement of people and goods. A single currency, the euro, has also been introduced. In 2012, the European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its contributions to peace and reconciliation among European nations. Its headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium. [Additional information] In addition to the EC member states of France, West Germany (now Germany), Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Spain, and Portugal, Austria, Finland, and Sweden joined in 1995, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia in 2004, Bulgaria and Romania in 2007, and Croatia in 2013. The United Kingdom left in January 2020, and there are now 27 countries (especially those that have adopted the euro). The basic treaty has been amended by the Treaty of Amsterdam, Treaty of Nice, and Treaty of Lisbon.
