In Japanese mythology, Amaterasu Omikami was angry at Susanoo's actions in Takamagahara and hid herself there. As a result, the world fell into darkness. The gods met together and made offerings, Ame-no-Uzume danced, and Tajikarao no Kami opened the rock door to reveal the great god. Some say it is related to the solar eclipse myth found in Indochina, but others say it is related to the requiem ceremony held at the winter solstice.

日本神話で，天照大神が高天原(たかまがはら)での素戔嗚(すさのお)尊の行為に怒り，身を隠した所。そのため世は暗黒になる。諸神相議して，捧げ物をし，天鈿女(あめのうずめ)命が舞い，手力雄神(たぢからおのかみ)が岩戸をあけて大神を出した。インドシナに分布する日食神話と関係づける説もあるが，冬至のときの鎮魂祭との関連を説く人もある。
