An old town in Munakata County in northern Fukuoka Prefecture. The town is covered by wide hilly areas of Paleogene strata, and rice paddies are opened up in the lowlands of the Tsuri River, producing rice, wheat, fruit trees, and vegetables. It faces the Genkai Sea and includes Okinochi Island and Katsushima Island. Pufferfish and other fish are also caught here. Kounominato is a bathing beach, and Kanezaki is famous for its female divers. Hetsumiya Shrine of Munakata Taisha Shrine is located in Tajima. It belongs to the Genkai Quasi-National Park. 福岡県北部,宗像(むなかた)郡の旧町。古第三紀層の丘陵地が広く,釣川の低地に水田が開け,米,麦,果樹,蔬菜を産する。玄界灘に臨み,沖の地島,勝島も含む。フグなどの漁獲もある。神湊(こうのみなと)は海水浴場,鐘崎は海女(あま)で有名。田島に宗像大社の辺津(へつ)宮がある。玄海国定公園に属する。2003年4月,宗像市と合併。34.68km2。9559人(2000)。
