Proof of the existence of God

This is one of the problems in Christian theology and philosophy. In Christianity, God is the object of faith, but just as the existence of various other things in the world and the believer himself is confirmed by reason, God's existence is also required to be confirmed rationally within the believer as an entity that is different from and transcends these things. The proof of God's existence is the process of this confirmation. Therefore, it is primarily a process of rational self-confirmation of the content of faith within the believer, but at the same time, it is a defense of God's existence by the believer to non-believers.

The seeds of this idea can be found in the ancient Greek Church Fathers and Augustine, but Anselm was the first to develop a clear and logical theory. According to him, God is "that than which no greater can be thought." To the person who hears and understands this phrase, it exists in the mind of that person. Now, between something that exists only in the mind and something that exists in the mind and in reality, the latter is greater than the former. However, God was "that than which no greater can be thought." Therefore, God does not only exist in the mind, but also in reality (Prothlogion 2). This was later called an "ontological argument" as a proof of God's existence from the idea of ​​God. In the early modern period, Descartes performed a similar proof. The validity of this proof has been argued for and against by many philosophers, including Kant and Hegel, and the debate continues to this day.

In response to this, Thomas Aquinas argued that the existence of God can be proven on an empirical basis, based on the knowledge of the existence of the world, as the basis for the existence of the world. There are five ways to do this, called the "five ways" (quinque viae). The first to third ways start from the fact of the movement and change of the existence of the world, and prove the existence of God as the first basis for the movement and change, and are based on Aristotle. The fourth way is based on the difference in the stages of perfection seen in the things existing in the world, and proves God, who is the most perfect being, as the basis for the establishment of these stages. The fifth way proves God as the basis of the rational order that exists in the world (Summa Theologica, Part 1, 2-3). These arguments that start from the existence of the world are collectively called "cosmological arguments." Kant considered these to be unavoidable as a requirement of rationality, but they could not have objective validity, and God should be sought in a different way.

キリスト教神学・哲学の問題の一つ。キリスト教において、神は信仰の対象であるが、世界における他のさまざまな事物や信仰者自身の存在が理性によって確認されるのに応じて、神の存在もこれらの事物とは異なる、これらの事物を越える存在として信仰者のうちにおいて理性的な道で確認されることを求められる。神の存在証明とはこの確認の手続である。それゆえ、それは第一義的には信仰者のうちにおける信仰内容の理性的な自己確認の手続であるが、同時に、非信仰者に対しては信仰者による神の存立の弁証となる。

　古代ギリシア教父やアウグスティヌスにもその萌芽(ほうが)はみられるが、透徹した論理的な思索を展開した最初の人はアンセルムスである。彼によれば、神とは「それよりも大いなるものが思考されえぬもの」である。このことばを聞き、これを理解する人にとって、それはその人の精神のうちに存する。ところで、精神のうちにだけ存するものと、精神のうちに存するとともに実在のうちにも存するものとでは、後者のほうが前者よりも大きい。しかるに、神は「それよりも大いなるものが思考されえぬもの」であった。それゆえ、神はただ精神のうちに存するだけではなく、実在のうちにも存する――とされる（『プロスロギオン』2）。これは、神の観念からその存在を証明するものとして、のちに「存在論的証明」ontological argumentとよばれる。近世ではデカルトがこれに似た証明を行った。この証明の妥当性については、カント、ヘーゲルをはじめ多くの哲学者が賛否両論を唱え、今日に至るまで論争が絶えない。

　これに対してトマス・アクィナスは、経験論的な基盤から、世界存在の認識に基づき、世界存在を存立させている根拠として神の存立を論証しうるとした。それには五つのやり方があり、「五つの道」quinque viaeとよばれる。第一から第三の道は世界存在の運動変化の事実から出発し、運動変化の第一根拠として神の存立を論証するものであり、アリストテレスによっている。第四の道は世界内の存在事物にみられる完全性の段階の相違に基づき、この段階を成立させる根拠として最高に完全なものである神を論証する。第五の道は世界内に存する理性的秩序の根拠として神を論証する（『神学大全』第1部2の3）。これら世界存在から出発する論証は総括して「宇宙論的論証」cosmological argumentとよばれる。カントは、これらを理性の合理性の要求としては不可避であるが、客観的な妥当性はもちえぬものとし、神はこれらとは別の道で求められるべきであるとした。
