Year of death: Enkei 1.12.29 (1309.2.9)
Year of birth: 1235
A Rinzai sect monk from the Kamakura period. The founder of the Daio school. A native of Abe County, Suruga (Shizuoka Prefecture). Also called "Jomyo." He studied under Rankei Doryu at Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura, and in 1259 he traveled to Song China, where he studied under Kyodo Chigu and inherited the Dharma. He returned to Japan in 1267, and is known for the "Hita no Ki" that Kyodo gave to Nanpo when he left China, and "Ipponpu," in which Kyodo and 43 other famous monks contributed poems and prose. After returning to Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura, he entered Kotokuji Temple in Sawara, Chikuzen (Fukuoka Prefecture) in 1221, and in 1226 he moved to Sofukuji Temple in Dazaifu (later relocated to Hakata) in 1304 at the request of Emperor Go-Uda. He lived at Toko-an in An'i, Rakusai, and entered Manju-ji Temple the following year. He attempted to found a Kagen Zen temple but failed. He became the chief priest of Kencho-ji Temple. The title of "Entsu Daio Kokushi" was bestowed upon him by Emperor Go-Uda, the first such title in Japan. His successor was Shuho Myocho (Daito Kokushi), and his grandson was Kanzan Egen, who formed the source of the lineage of today's Rinzai Zen, and this is known as Zen of the Otokan school or the Otokanmon school. <References> Ogisu Jundo, "History of Medieval Japanese Zen"
