American film actor. Born in Ohio. After working in various jobs, he was an extra in a movie and on the stage before signing with MGM Pictures. He appeared in films such as "It Happened One Night" (1934, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor), "The Battle of the South Seas" (1935), "Gone with the Wind" (1939), and "Boom Town" (1940). His rugged appearance and sometimes arrogant attitude, bordering on brazen, made him popular, and he reigned as a representative star known as the "King of Hollywood." He died suddenly two weeks after the filming of "The Misfits" (released in 1961) finished.
